The Culver Center Digital Mural Project 2011-2016
The LED digital mural flanking the main entrance was specifically designed for the two front vitrines at the Culver Center of the Arts. This project represented a cutting-edge fusion of technology and artistic expression. Designed to be adaptable, this system serves as a dynamic and versatile digital space, seamlessly blending into the architectural landscape while acting as a vibrant canvas for the innovative endeavors of UCR ARTSblock.
The conceptualization of the digital mural prioritized scalability and adaptability, offering a platform for diverse artistic content utilizing images, videos, sound, and specially crafted programs. This approach ensured the creation of a dynamic and creative space that welcomed guests upon entry. Some of the projects hosted incorporated advanced features like motion sensing, heat detection, and even custom-built devices utilizing Arduino boards. Our primary software for the mural was designed in Adobe AIR, a runtime system programmed with Adobe Animate, ActionScript, and optionally Apache Flex. Additionally, we developed a foundational program in Cycle 74 Max. My team and I conducted workshops for artists, explaining the system's functionality and providing a base AIR and Max program as a starting point.
The design featured two vertical screens positioned on either side of the door, behind the mural. These screens showcased upcoming events, programs, and films hosted by UCR ARTSblock, as well as static or dynamically animated movie posters, reminiscent of the visual style now observed on Apple Music album covers.
