By Design, 2001
"By Design" is an artwork created specifically for the Gallery space at Midway Studios. The fundamental concept behind this piece is to engage with the existing space, particularly emphasizing architectural elements like the main fireplace. By highlighting these features, such as the fireplace, the artwork subtly references the historical aspects of the space prior to its current state. My project introduces an alternative narrative tied to a temporal fantasy, taking the form of a contemporary design motif inspired by the IKEA catalogue.
Over the course of eight weeks, I crafted furniture out of cardboard, following furniture and interior design concepts outlined in Anoop Parikh's book, "Using Your IKEA Home Furnishings." The project unfolded over five days and included an installation performance. Throughout this period, I, dressed in brown overalls, methodically installed components of a domestic environment, including a kitchen, lighting, and other small touches. The installation culminated in a housewarming party instead of a traditional opening, and it concluded with the systematic dismantling and recycling of materials on the fifth day. This process not only transformed the physical space but also invited viewers to contemplate the interplay between the historical context, contemporary design, and the transient nature of the space itself.
